Peace with dignity in Jammu & Kashmir soon: Mufti
[ SUNDAY, JUNE 20, 2004 07:09:01 PM ]
SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed today said the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has changed for good and the objective of complete peace will be realized soon.
Mufti was talking to the delegates of European Union who had called on him at his residence. The delegates are in Kashmir for three days Indo-EU round table meet. "There is a discernible change in the situation. There is a relaxation in the atmosphere, People can move freely which was not possible before", he said.
Mufti said that his government is committed to bring complete peace in the state and all efforts are being done in this regard. "We are committed to bring about complete peace with dignity and ensure all round development in the state", he said.
Mufti said the steps taken by the coalition government had instill sense of security among the people. "Long period of turmoil in the sate has damaged the basic infrastructure in critical sectors like education and communication. We have taken a pledge to take the state out of the turmoil. And we have been successful in this endeavor" he said.
The chief minister said that the government's healing touch policy was aimed at nursing the wounds of the people and it has started to pay dividends as people were now feeling a greater sense of security.
Reaffirming his faith in democracy, Mufti said that the coalition believed in the freedom of expression and that is why several separatist leaders were released from jails. "The government has promoted a free atmosphere where dissent is treated as part of democratic right. Security forces have been made accountable and any body found guilty of any sort of human rights abuses is being dealt with according to law", he said. Mufti urged the EU delegates to impress upon their government to withdraw travel advisories barring people from visiting Kashmir because the situation has changed.
The European co-chairman of Indo-European Round Table Roger Briech expressed satisfaction over the commitment to peace and development of the chief minister. He said he would return with positive impressions of Kashmir.
