Health Kalon Inaugurates Medical Council’s Office

Dharamsala, 6 August: The office block of the newly formed Che thoe Menpai Lhentsog (Central Association of Traditional Tibetan Medicine) was inaugurated today by Mr. Lobsang Nyandak, Kalon for health of the Central Tibetan Administration. The office is located in the campus of the Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute.

Kalon Lobsang Nyandak offered traditional Tibetan scarf to the portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama before lighting the butter lamp.

The Tibetan doctors of Sowa Rigpa (one of the five major fields of traditional studies of Tibet) had formed the medical council in coordination with the department of health. More than a hundred Tibetan doctors from different places in India and abroad gathered here in January this year for a two-day conference of Tibetan Sorig medical doctors. The doctors elected the members of the council. The council comprises of the Senior Physician to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, three doctors from the Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute elected by the doctors of the institute, four non -TMAI doctors and an allopathic doctor appointed by the department of health.

The council will work towards tackling the various problems faced today by the traditional Tibetan healing science. As the Tibetan healing science becomes more and more popular in the west, there is an apparent fear that it might get commercialised.
